Keyframe Cinematic Illustration
Project: The Underdogs

Synopsis
The Underdogs is a personal creative project in which inspiration sites between the media digested in my childhood, such as movies and games from Quentin Tarantino's cinema to video-games like Hitman and Metal Gear Solid.
The personal challenge was to develop more efficient 2D digital techniques without resorting to 3D software, thus slashing production and delivery time, putting creativity first, the process second.
The Goal:
To achieve a 2D independent process that is reliable when speed is a factor.

Being versed in 3D for a while, due to the projects I had previously tackled, I thought to seek personal growth in a 2D skill-set, going back to basics.
Focusing on shapes, black and white values, and brushstroke style to make something reverent to oil painters I like, such as Phil Hale and Ashley Wood.
It would be a nice goal to aim to, the growing of a skill-set, and at the same time make it within the style I'd one day aspire to have.
The Progress:
Moving onto color would prove less difficult by starting with quicker compositions, this way we could give our whole undivided attention to the core of the piece, the composition, which is often what drives everything that comes next.
Sometimes I'd also scribble quick compositions just to go even more to the core of everything, and solve the movement and how the whole thing reads at very basic levels.
—
New Objectives:
Later on, I decided that the character design itself could be suggested a bit better, so I moved on to isolating a few characters from the keyframes, exploring the Neo-Noir from different angles.
—
The Results:
By the end of this project, a faster means to design was achieved, the process and result sometimes site right into what the needs of production are, while I had been driven to always use 3D as an upfront investment of my time to get realistic results, starting with digital painting proved invaluable in some cases, one process did not replace the other, but as time goes on, I find that they complement one another for efficiency.
